Why buy a car security system?

   Protecting yourself and your family as well as your vehicle and car stereo equipment are all excellent reasons to invest in a car security system. Experts will tell you that if you do not want your vehicle stolen or burglarized, you will want some visible deterrent to discourage the thief. At the minimum you would want to park your vehicle in a safe place with your doors locked, use an immobilizer/starter kill to prevent the thief from hot-wiring your vehicle and driving off. However to offer protection against auto-crime you should equip the vehicle with a full featured security system which includes: an alarm, siren, a brain module with a sophisticated microprocessor and a shock/impact sensor.
How do factory security systems compare to aftermarket systems?

This depends on several different factors and we should compare apples to apples. Most factory "security systems" are actually just "anti-theft systems" meaning they are just engine disable/starter kill and not full featured security system with a sensor. But let's say we are comparing true security systems. If they are both quality systems, carefully installed then the main factor will be weighed heavily against the factory system is the assembly line. All systems for a particular make and model will be installed exactly the same with publicly-available instructions in service manuals telling thieves how to disable them! Another disadvantage with a factory system is that they lack impact/shock sensors and rely on door triggers. An aftermarket system properly installed will be harder to bypass and offer many more layers of defense and protection.
